Beauty & Bodywork Insurance has released its 2025 claims report, providing detailed insight into the operational risks facing salon, spa, and independent beauty professionals nationwide. The analysis of real insurance claims paired with consumer survey findings reveals both the frequency of everyday incidents and the growing importance of insurance coverage in building client trust.
The report examined claims filed by hairstylists, estheticians, nail technicians, lash artists, massage therapists, and other beauty professionals, with total payouts reaching $929,187 in 2025. The median claim amount was $2,500, while the average claim came to $4,890. Most incidents fell within a manageable financial range, with the vast majority of claims staying under $10,000, though larger events accounted for a significant share of total payouts despite occurring less frequently.
Water damage emerged as the most common type of claim filed by beauty and bodywork professionals, while property-related incidents and service-related injuries also appeared frequently across claims. Certain events, however, carried far greater financial consequences, with fire-related incidents accounting for a disproportionate share of total payouts despite representing a small percentage of overall claims.
"Most claims beauty and bodywork professionals face come from everyday operational issues rather than catastrophic events," said Daryle Stafford, CEO of Veracity Insurance. "Routine incidents happen more often than people expect. Insurance helps professionals handle those situations without interrupting their business, while also protecting them if a rare but costly event occurs."
The report's significance extends beyond claims data, as BBI paired its analysis with a national survey of 1,000 U.S. adults to better understand client preferences when choosing beauty and bodywork providers. Sixty-two percent of respondents said they are more likely to book with a professional who carries liability insurance, ranking this consideration alongside service quality, affordability, and provider credentials.
"Insurance does more than cover losses," said JoAnne Hammer, Program Manager at BBI. "Many clients see it as a sign that a professional runs a responsible business. Coverage helps protect the provider if something goes wrong and signals to clients that the person delivering the service takes their work seriously."
The findings highlight how insurance coverage has evolved from a purely financial protection tool to a business differentiator that influences consumer choice in the competitive beauty industry. For professionals, the data provides valuable insight into where operational risks are most concentrated and how investing in proper coverage can both protect their business and attract clients who increasingly prioritize working with insured providers.
BBI compiled the report using claims with 2025 dates of loss along with survey responses collected from a nationally representative sample of 1,000 U.S. adults in November 2024. To read the full report, please visit https://www.insurebodywork.com/blog/beauty-and-bodywork-liability-statistics.
