Machu Picchu, one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World, has been certified as a Carbon Neutral destination. This accolade was announced on June 27th, coinciding with the 17th anniversary of its selection as one of the world's modern wonders. This achievement positions Peru at the forefront of environmental sustainability and highlights the country's proactive measures in combating climate change.
The recognition as a Carbon Neutral destination is a testament to the collective commitment of both public and private sectors. Key contributors to this milestone include the Municipality of Machu Picchu, Grupo AJE, Inkaterra, and Tetra Pak. Additionally, organizations such as PROMPERÚ, World Xchange, Luz del Sur, Bosques Amazónicos (BAM), Latam, and CANATUR played pivotal roles in supporting this initiative.
The certification was awarded by Green Initiative, a leader in climate certification within the tourism sector, acknowledging Machu Picchu's adherence to decarbonization goals. The historic sanctuary has implemented effective measures to reduce its carbon footprint and offset remaining emissions through sustainable practices, including solid waste management and promoting a circular economy.
To achieve this recognition, Machu Picchu adopted four key processes for reusing recyclable waste. These included the installation of a PET plastic and cardboard compactor plant, a biodiesel plant to process used cooking oil from restaurants and casinos, and a pyrolysis plant. These initiatives have not only minimized waste but also fostered an eco-friendly environment.
Claricia Tirado, Executive President of PROMPERÚ, emphasized the importance of sustainable development during a ceremony at Plaza Manco Capac in Aguas Calientes. “At PROMPERÚ, we are firmly committed to contributing to the sustainable and decentralized development of our country,” said Tirado. She further stressed the responsibility of both public and private sector roles in ensuring that economic benefits are paired with sustainable management.
The certification considered the baseline carbon emission results from 2019 and focused on stimulating actions for reducing, treating, and correctly managing generated waste. This also included raising awareness among residents, businesses, and hotels about the importance of sustainability.
Machu Picchu's achievement as the only wonder of the world with a Carbon Neutral certification not only sets a precedent for other historical and tourist sites but also reinforces the importance of collaborative efforts in achieving environmental sustainability. This milestone serves as an inspiration and a model for global sustainability practices in heritage conservation and tourism.
