The Historic Sanctuary of Machupicchu, located in the Cusco region, has received the prestigious certification as a 'Carbon Neutral Destination' on the 17th anniversary of its designation as one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World. This accomplishment places Peru at the forefront of global environmental sustainability initiatives and underscores its commitment to addressing climate change.
This notable certification is the result of a collaborative effort involving both public and private sectors. Key participants include the Municipality of Machupicchu, AJE Group, Inkaterra, Tetra Pak, PROMPERÚ, World Xchange, Luz del Sur, Bosques Amazónicos (BAM), Latam, and CANATUR. The certification was awarded by Green Initiative, a leading entity in climate certification within the tourism sector, recognizing Machupicchu's success in meeting its decarbonization objectives.
To earn this recognition, Machupicchu implemented a series of effective measures to reduce its carbon footprint and offset remaining emissions. These measures include sustainable practices such as solid waste management and the promotion of a circular economy. PROMPERÚ's Executive President, Claricia Tirado, emphasized the importance of sustainable and decentralized development during the certification ceremony held at Manco Cápac Square in Aguas Calientes. Tirado stated, 'All of us who play a role in the public or private sector have the responsibility to ensure that the economic benefits generated are accompanied by sustainable management.'
The certification process was based on 2019 carbon emissions data and focused on promoting actions to reduce, treat, and manage waste effectively. Efforts also included raising awareness among residents, businesses, and hotels about sustainable practices. Four key processes were implemented to reuse waste: the installation of a PET plastic and cardboard compacting plant, a biodiesel plant to process waste oil from restaurants and casinos, an organic waste pyrolyzing plant to generate natural charcoal, and two glass crushing machines to convert bottles into construction and ornamental materials.
This circular economy model breathes new life into usable waste materials, including plastic, cardboard, Tetra Pak containers, and glass, alongside oil treatment. These initiatives highlight the importance of sustainable waste management and the potential for creating valuable resources from waste.
PROMPERÚ continues to champion responsible and sustainable tourism, recognizing it not merely as a means to stand out but as an essential practice. The certification of Machupicchu as a 'Carbon Neutral Destination' serves as a powerful example of what can be achieved through collaborative efforts and dedicated environmental stewardship.
