Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation® Announces Nationwide Walk/Run Events to Accelerate Cure

For over a quarter-century, the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation® (MMRF) has been at the forefront of cancer research, specifically focusing on multiple myeloma, the second most common blood cancer. Michael Andreini, President and Chief Executive Officer of the MMRF, emphasizes the transformative strides made in myeloma research, acknowledging the indispensable role of the myeloma community's persistent efforts. 'We remain committed to taking calculated risks and driving innovation through collaboration with our partners,' Andreini states, reaffirming the organization's dedication to advancing treatments for myeloma patients.

The MMRF's upcoming Walk/Run events, scheduled from August to December, offer an opportunity for the public to contribute to these efforts. Registration is free, and participants are encouraged to start fundraising immediately. Most events are held over the weekend, typically beginning between 8:15 am and 9:00 am and concluding by 11:00 am.

Since its inception, the MMRF has raised over $600 million for research, initiated nearly 100 clinical trials, and facilitated the approval of more than 15 FDA-approved therapies. These milestones have collectively tripled the life expectancy of myeloma patients, underscoring the significant impact of continued support and participation in events like the Walk/Run.

The funds raised through these events enable the MMRF to invest further in research and development, expediting the creation and dissemination of new therapies. Additionally, the organization leverages data to optimize and personalize treatment approaches, empowering myeloma patients and the broader community with essential information and resources. This comprehensive strategy not only aims to extend patients' lives but also helps them advocate for their care effectively.

In recognition of the extraordinary commitment and resilience within the myeloma community, the MMRF presents the Spirit of Hope Award at each Walk/Run event. This award honors individuals or groups who inspire hope and demonstrate exceptional dedication to the organization's mission. The award recipients for the first two events in California are Archana More Sharma and MaryLee Millard, who will be honored in memory of her husband, Dennis.

The first two Walk/Run events will take place in California. The initial event is scheduled for Saturday, August 17th, at Griffith Park, chaired by Dr. Scott Goldsmith from City of Hope, with the Spirit of Hope award going to Archana More Sharma. The second event will occur on Saturday, August 24th, at Marina Green, chaired by Dr. Jeffrey Wolf, Dr. Tom Martin, and Dr. Ajai Chari from UCSF, with the Spirit of Hope award presented to MaryLee Millard.

For those interested in participating or supporting the cause, additional details and registration options are available on the MMRF website. By joining these events, individuals can contribute to the ongoing efforts to accelerate a cure for multiple myeloma, significantly impacting thousands of patients and their families.
