Nuzhat Ahmed Cookbook Brings 29 South Asian Family Recipes and Their Stories to Home Kitchens

A new cookbook from author and lifelong home cook Nuzhat Ahmed is set to bring traditional South Asian home cooking and the family memories attached to it to a wider audience. World Publishing Company has announced the forthcoming publication of Nuzhat Classic Recipes, Volume One: The Stories Behind the Recipes, a collection of 29 classic South Asian dishes organised into seven sections: Lamb & Beef, Chicken, Vegetables, Fish & Seafood, Rice, Breads, and Desserts.

The announcement matters for home cooks who want reliable, approachable versions of dishes they may know from family tables, and for families seeking to preserve culinary traditions that are often passed down informally rather than written down. The collection includes everyday favourites such as Aloo Gosht, Qeema Matar, and Palak Aloo, alongside celebratory dishes including Chicken Chargha, Badami Qorma, Chicken Biryani, and Zarda rice. Each recipe includes a complete ingredient list, step-by-step instructions, serving suggestions, and practical cooking tips, with the book designed for home cooks seeking dependable recipes that combine traditional flavours with accessible techniques.

What distinguishes the collection is its emphasis on the stories behind the dishes. Readers encounter memories of a grandmother preparing Badami Qorma in the style of royal kitchens, a father's kitchen mishap that became a treasured family story, a London wedding where Rogan Josh was mistaken for spoiled qorma, and a mother who used homemade Firni to encourage her children to complete their chores. In the book, Ahmed writes that some recipes are more than food and are vessels for memory, carrying the voices, gestures and love of the people who made them. She adds that sometimes a recipe is not just about the ingredients but about the person who taught you what home cooking tastes like.

The book also features home-friendly versions of Chicken Tikka Masala, White Chicken Kadhai, Reshmi Kebab, Carrot Halva, Mango Kulfi, Gulab Jamun, and Classic Summer Pudding. Practical shortcuts help make these dishes approachable for cooks with busy schedules, an implication that could widen the book's appeal beyond experienced cooks to those balancing work and family life.

Volume One is intended for readers who appreciate traditional recipes and families who want to preserve their culinary memories. It is the first instalment in a planned three-volume collection, with Volumes Two and Three to follow, suggesting the project will grow into a broader record of South Asian home cooking.

Ahmed's background informs the collection. She completed her early education in Karachi, trained as a teacher in London, and has lived in England for nearly 30 years while maintaining a strong connection to the flavours and culinary memories that shaped her. Her cooking was recognised in 2012 when she won a competition featured on MTV and was profiled in the Newham Recorder. Having published her first cookbook in 2009, she now begins a new chapter with Nuzhat Classic Recipes. For Ahmed, home cooking should be approachable, satisfying, and full of flavour, and every meal is an opportunity to share joy.
