The Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland - Medical University of Bahrain (RCSI Bahrain) has unveiled plans for a significant $45 million expansion of its campus, coinciding with its 20th anniversary in Bahrain. This strategic project underscores the University's enduring commitment to improving human health, patient care, and societal well-being, with a focus on interdisciplinary clinical and patient-centered research to address key health challenges on a national, regional, and global scale.
RCSI Bahrain recently formalized an agreement with Nass Corporation for the construction of the new campus facilities. The ambitious expansion includes a state-of-the-art academic building, adding 7,912 sqm of advanced medical education and research space. The new facilities will feature enhanced teaching spaces, cutting-edge research labs, a modern library, social spaces, and a spacious event hall. Notably, the project integrates sustainability measures such as low-carbon transportation options, including bike racks and EV charging stations, as well as energy-efficient features like solar panels, LED lighting, and water conservation systems. The design also incorporates native plants and green spaces to foster an environmentally friendly campus.
Professor Sameer Otoom, President of RCSI Bahrain, highlighted the significance of the expansion, stating, "As we celebrate our 20th anniversary in Bahrain, we are proud to celebrate this milestone, boasting a diverse network of over 3,000 alumni and healthcare professionals from 56 nationalities comprising 459 doctors and 1,321 nurses, which have significantly contributed to strengthening Bahrain's comprehensive healthcare system."
Further emphasizing the University's dedication to sustainability and academic excellence, Professor Otoom added, "Our planned campus expansion aligns with Bahrain's vision to cement itself as a leading regional hub for healthcare and education, benefiting from a highly skilled workforce, welcoming and tolerant community, and exceptional lifestyle."
Munther Almudawi, Executive Director of Business Development for Healthcare, Education, and Tourism at Bahrain EDB, expressed support for the project, noting RCSI Bahrain's long-standing history of innovation since its establishment in 1784. Almudawi remarked, "We take pride in RCSI Bahrain’s 20 years of milestone successes on the island and look forward to witnessing the development of its sustainably-led campus expansion project, which will add value to the diversity of Bahrain’s highly-developed education and healthcare ecosystems."
According to a National Economic Contribution Report by PwC Ireland, RCSI Bahrain contributes an estimated $91 million annually to the national economy through its operations, student expenditures, and the economic ripple effect from international students' visitors. The new academic building is projected to inject an additional $102 million into the economy over the next four years. Beyond its economic impact, the University plays a crucial role in Bahrain's socio-economic development by enhancing local healthcare workforce skills, supporting national research priorities, and championing environmental, social, and governance (ESG) sustainability. RCSI Bahrain's activities support 437 jobs, with half of its 227 full-time staff being Bahraini nationals who benefit from continuous professional development programs.
