Toys for Tots Literacy Program Launches Operation Turn the Page to Combat Summer Learning Loss

The Marine Toys for Tots Literacy Program has announced a nationwide back-to-school initiative called Operation Turn the Page, designed to address the critical issue of limited access to books for children in low-income communities. The program, which has distributed over 63 million books and educational resources since 2008, aims to help children strengthen literacy skills and return to school ready to learn.

The initiative comes at a time when the need for literacy support remains significant. In low-income communities, there may be only one age-appropriate book available for every 300 children. This scarcity can hinder academic success, and summer learning loss can exacerbate the problem, making the transition back to school more difficult for many students.

Lieutenant General Jim Laster, U.S. Marines (Retired), President and CEO of the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation, emphasized the importance of the program. "A single book may seem like a small gift, but for a child impacted by summer learning loss, it can open the door to possibilities they never knew existed," he said. "When children living in low-income communities have access to books throughout the summer, they return to school more confident, engaged, and prepared to learn. When you give a book, you unlock a future."

The impact of Operation Turn the Page is already being felt in schools across the country. A teacher at Freedom Trail Elementary noted, "For many of our students, receiving these books means more than just reading—it’s the beginning of their first home library and a lifelong love of learning." At United Elementary, more than 400 books were distributed, with staff reporting that students showed "excitement, pride, and a growing love of reading both in school and at home." Another teacher at Entheos Academy shared a heartwarming story: "One student’s face lit up with pure wonder when she found a book about baseball—proof that the right book can spark a lifelong love of reading."

These stories highlight the mission of Operation Turn the Page: ensuring that disadvantaged children have access to books over the summer so they can enter the classroom with confidence and a stronger foundation for success. The initiative is not just about distributing books; it's about creating moments that inspire learning and growth.

The implications of this initiative are significant. By providing books to children who might otherwise lack them, Operation Turn the Page helps level the playing field for academic achievement. Literacy is a fundamental skill that affects all areas of education, and by addressing summer learning loss, the program aims to reduce the achievement gap that often exists between children from different socioeconomic backgrounds.

For supporters, the opportunity to contribute is straightforward. As the press release states, "A single book can inspire a love of reading, strengthen literacy skills, and help a child start the school year ready to learn. By supporting Operation Turn the Page, donors are doing more than giving a book—they are helping disadvantaged children turn the page on summer learning loss and toward academic success and a brighter future."
