JapanFest Atlanta 2024 is set to commemorate more than half a century of strong ties between Georgia and Japan with a spectacular event featuring a diverse array of cultural performances and activities. Highlighting the festival are headlining acts such as Miyabiya, who will present a unique blend of traditional and modernized Kabuki theater—recognized as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage—and the celebrated Broadway performer and Rakugo storyteller Katsura Sunshine, known as the "King of Kimono Comedy."
Attendees can look forward to a full day of entertainment with performances by the Matsuriza Taiko Japanese Drum Troupe, Samurai Sword Soul, and various demonstrations of martial arts including sumo, karate, kendo, and kyudo. This year's festival promises to be a feast for the senses, offering an extensive menu of Japanese cuisine from local restaurants. Options will range from bento boxes and ramen noodles to sushi, yakisoba, and shaved ice, available at the Japanese Food Court and Beer Garden.
The festival will also offer a variety of cultural exhibits and hands-on workshops. Visitors can participate in calligraphy, Bonsai, Ikebana flower arranging, Kimono fitting, origami, and traditional tea ceremonies. The children’s area will provide opportunities for kids to make Japanese crafts, try Kabuki face painting, and participate in the o-mikoshi parade, where they can help carry a traditional Japanese portable shrine.
For those interested in shopping, Ginza Dori, named after Tokyo’s famous shopping district, will feature festival-style games, accessories, snacks, and toys. Over 100 vendor booths will offer a wide range of Japanese goods, including kimono, tea, dolls, handmade crafts, and anime/manga items. Additionally, the Japanese Businesses in Georgia (JBiG) exhibition will showcase products from the more than 600 Japanese-affiliated companies based in the state. Interactive exhibits will highlight the latest in Japanese technology, featuring automobiles, tractors, electronics, video games, and virtual reality.
Ticket prices are set at $16 for advanced purchases available until September 20th, and $20 at the door. Family and friends packages, offering four tickets for $70 or five tickets for $90, will be available at the door. Admission is free for children aged six and under, and discounted tickets are available for military personnel and seniors at $16. Group tickets and sponsorship opportunities can also be arranged.
JapanFest Atlanta is organized by the Japanese Chamber of Commerce of Georgia and The Japan-America Society of Georgia, with support from the Consulate General of Japan in Atlanta. The festival aims to foster friendship and cultural exchange between Japanese and American communities in the Southeast, drawing over 20,000 visitors annually.
