Quantum BioPharma Cuts Costs by 53% and Secures FDA Approval for Phase 2 MS Trial

Quantum BioPharma (NASDAQ: QNTM) (CSE: QNTM) announced its second-quarter 2026 financial results, revealing a 53% reduction in operating expenses to $2.29 million and a 47% decrease in general and administrative expenses to $1.76 million compared to the same period last year. The biopharmaceutical company also reported cash, cash equivalents, and digital assets totaling approximately $9.5 million as of June 30, up from $4.1 million at the end of 2025. Management believes that this liquidity, based on the first-half burn rate, is sufficient to fund planned operations until at least October 2027.

More significantly, subsequent to the quarter-end, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Quantum’s Investigational New Drug (IND) application for Lucid-MS, the company’s lead compound for treating progressive multiple sclerosis (MS). This clearance allows Quantum to proceed with a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled Phase 2 clinical trial. The advancement underscores Quantum’s commitment to addressing challenging neurodegenerative disorders, particularly MS, a chronic autoimmune disease affecting the central nervous system.

Lucid-MS is a patented new chemical entity that has shown in preclinical models to prevent and reverse myelin degradation, the underlying mechanism of MS. If successful in clinical trials, it could offer a disease-modifying therapy that not only halts progression but potentially repairs damage, a significant unmet need in MS treatment. Current therapies primarily manage symptoms or reduce relapse rates but do not effectively reverse disability.

The financial improvements are notable for investors as the company streamlines operations while progressing its pipeline. The reduced cash burn extends the company’s runway, providing greater financial stability as it embarks on expensive late-stage clinical trials. The increased cash position, coupled with lower expenses, may also position Quantum favorably for future partnerships or additional funding.

Beyond Lucid-MS, Quantum holds a 19.84% stake in Unbuzzd Wellness Inc. (formerly Celly Nutrition Corp.), which markets an over-the-counter version of its alcohol misuse product, unbuzzd™. The agreement includes royalty payments of 7% of sales until $250 million is reached, after which the royalty drops to 3% in perpetuity. Quantum retains 100% rights to develop pharmaceutical and medical formulations of similar products.

The FDA’s approval of the IND is a major regulatory milestone that de-risks the development pathway for Lucid-MS. It validates the preclinical data and the company’s research efforts. For the MS community, the initiation of a Phase 2 trial brings hope for a novel therapy that could alter the disease trajectory. For the industry, it represents progress in the challenging field of neuroregeneration.

As Quantum advances its clinical programs, the company’s prudent cost management and strategic asset development will be key to its success. The next phases of clinical testing will be critical in determining the safety and efficacy of Lucid-MS in humans. Investors and patients alike will be watching closely as the trial progresses.
