Remote Work Relocation Fuels 2026 Storage Trends, US Self Storage Reports

The 2026 peak moving season is being shaped by remote and hybrid work arrangements, according to a new report from US Self Storage, a nationwide platform that helps renters compare and reserve storage facilities. The company released insights on trends influencing consumer behavior from April to September, the busiest months for moving activity in the United States.

Several patterns have emerged this year, including continued migration toward the Sun Belt and Mountain West regions, increased relocations driven by remote work, and a rise in shorter-term rental needs tied to temporary housing. Demand for climate-controlled storage and interest from first-time renters and recent graduates are also up.

“These shifts are affecting how renters search for and select storage facilities across major metro areas,” the company stated. Renters can use the platform to compare facilities and reserve space, with many seeking storage units near them that align with evolving preferences.

The self-storage industry is adapting with growing demand for flexible month-to-month leases, increased reliance on digital tools, and greater interest in 24-hour access and vehicle storage. Transparent pricing and online reservations remain key priorities.

Choosing the right unit size is critical. A 5x5 unit suits boxes and seasonal items, while a 5x10 holds a studio apartment’s contents. A 5x15 fits a one-bedroom, and 10x10 units accommodate one-bedroom or small two-bedroom homes. For larger moves, 10x15 to 10x30 units store multi-bedroom households.

Amenities are driving peak season demand. Climate-controlled units protect sensitive items from summer heat, and 24-hour access offers flexibility. Car storage is popular for vehicles and recreational equipment used during warmer months.

With thousands of facilities listed nationwide, US Self Storage helps renters find solutions that fit their location, timeline, and budget. Customers can explore units and reserve through the US Self Storage platform.
