Voyageur Pharmaceuticals Ltd. (TSX.V: VM) (OTC Pink: VYYRF) has reached a significant milestone in its collaboration with Bayer AG, receiving a USD $1 million payment after Bayer approved its feasibility work plan for iodine production. The announcement, made on September 9, 2026, marks progress in the company's effort to establish a North American source of high-purity iodine for use in medical imaging contrast agents.

The payment is part of a non-dilutive Collaboration and Funding Agreement signed with Bayer on February 10, 2026, which provides up to USD $2.35 million in total funding. With the initial USD $350,000 paid in March, Voyageur has now received USD $1.35 million. The remaining USD $1 million will be released upon completion of the feasibility study.

According to the company, its Houston R&D team has successfully demonstrated its proprietary Mueller iodine extraction process, producing 99.8% purity iodine from produced water in the Anadarko Basin. This technical success prompted Bayer to approve the feasibility work plan and remit the milestone payment. A transportable pilot plant is nearing completion and is scheduled to begin field operations this fall, with engineering support from Fluor Corporation (NYSE: FLR).

The feasibility study, progressing through FEL-2 and FEL-3 phases, aims to define a demonstration-scale configuration for iodine extraction. The project proposes an initial production capacity of 200 tonnes per year, with potential expansion to 1,000 tonnes annually. If successful, this could lead to a long-term offtake agreement with Bayer and reduce reliance on imported iodine, which is critical for contrast media manufacturing.

The importance of this development extends beyond Voyageur. The global contrast media market is estimated at approximately USD $7.06 billion, and iodine is a key raw material. Currently, North America relies heavily on imported iodine, creating supply chain vulnerabilities. By developing a domestic source, Voyageur aims to improve supply chain security, reduce costs, and lower operating expenses for contrast agent production.

Brent Willis, President and CEO of Voyageur, highlighted the strategic value: “Achievement of this first milestone under our agreement with Bayer is an important step forward for Voyageur. It confirms that the feasibility work is advancing as planned and triggers the first major non-dilutive payment under the collaboration. This capital is expected to further accelerate our iodine supply strategy and move us closer to validating a reliable North American source of high-purity iodine for use in contrast media drugs.”

Voyageur's broader strategy includes vertical integration in the radiology contrast market, with plans to produce both barium and iodine-based contrast agents. The company owns a 100% interest in the Frances Creek barium project and has developed five barium contrast products licensed by Health Canada. By controlling raw material sourcing and manufacturing, Voyageur aims to become the first fully integrated company in this sector.

The non-dilutive funding will support continued feasibility work through 2026, reflecting ongoing technical progress. Should the feasibility study succeed, the collaboration could expand into a second phase, potentially securing a stable supply of high-purity iodine for Bayer's contrast drug manufacturing.

Fluor's engineering support has been instrumental, with work proceeding on schedule. The next engineering phases will refine the design and cost estimates, setting the stage for a potential commercial rollout. Voyageur plans to provide further updates as technical milestones are achieved.

This announcement is particularly relevant to the medical imaging industry, where contrast media are essential for diagnostic procedures such as CT scans and X-rays. A reliable domestic iodine supply could mitigate supply disruptions and price volatility, ultimately benefiting healthcare providers and patients through more stable availability of these critical diagnostic agents.
